Sabsige Soppina Akki Rotti

Sabsige Soppina Akki Rotti is nutritious, wholesome blend of n rice flour making it a healthy breakfast delight. Enjoy your greens and stay healthy! 

Akki Rotti is a favorite breakfast item in Karnataka. We can use various vegetables and make it. This one is made from Sabsige soppu aka Dill Leaves .


Ingredients 
Rice flour       2 cups 
Dill Leaves          1 bunch finely chopped
Cilantro leaves          handful chopped
Green chillies            7-8 finely chopped
Jeera/Cumin seeds             1 tsp
oil                             2Tbsp
Salt                          to taste
Water                       as req

Method 

 Mix Rice flour(akki Hittu)  with chopped and  washed dill leaves, add salt,chilies, cumin seeds.
Add water and mix well add little curds.
Cover and leave overnite.(Dough should be of medium softness not too hard or too soft.) 
Next day ,take a tava ,smear  1tsp of oil around, take the dough and spread around it add water to flatten on the tava.

Keep this on medium heat, add oil around the roti ,cover, check if done.
If you want more crispy leave it a little longer. 
Once done rotti it comes out easily from pan.

To make another rotti, hold the pan upside down and run cold water all around it, pan will be cool to make another rotti by this time.

Enjoy hot Sabsige Akki rotti with butter and chutney /pickle of your choice.

Tomato Gravy

Tomato Gravy with Idli,tomato kurma,chutney
Tomato Gravy with Idli

Tomato Gravy with Idli is easy to prepare. Just a another side dish for IDLI if you are bored with chutnies. A nice blend of spice and tanginess.


  •  Ingredients
  • 3 Tomatoes (finely chopped) 
  •  1 tbsp Oil 
  •  1/2 tsp Mustard
  •  1/2 tsp jeera
  •  1/2 tsp chana dal
  •   1/2 urad dal
  • Hing-pinch
  •  Turmeric-pinch
  • 1/4 tsp Sugar 
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Curry leaves-few
  • For grinding
  • 1-2 tsp coconut
  • 1-2 tsp sambhar pwd
  •  1 clove
  • 1-2 kalamiri



Method- Grind the items with little mentioned under for Grinding. Next heat Oil in pan,add mustard,chanadal,uraddal,hing,tumeric,curry leaves,chilies and fry for some time. Add chopped tomatoes and  fry well. Once done add salt ,add ground mix and mix well , fry for some time till it thickens. Enjoy with hot idlis.

Green Moong Paratha

Moong Paratha is very healthy and nutritious stuffing of Green Moong with spices , a delicious breakfast recipe.A perfect lunch box recipe for kids too.

Green Moong can be used to make Salads, Curry, Parathas.Try all these options.

Green Moong Paratha
Ingredients  
  • Wheat flour  2 cups 
  • cooked and mashed moong 1/2 cup 
  • Red chilly pwd 1/2 Tsp
  • Garam masala pwd 1/2 Tsp 
  • Dhania jeera pwd-1/2 tsp
  • Green chutney-1 tsp
  • Salt to taste   
  • oil  
  • Jeera-few 
  • Ajwain-few
    
Method

1.Knead the flour with water, a little salt,oil into a soft dough.Cover it for 4-5 hours.
2.In a Kadai heat oil, add  jeera.Then add the cooked moong,salt, masala powders, and fry for a while and mix well.Fry till dry set aside to cool. Divide the mixture into balls. 
3.Make parathas.Heat a skillet (tava) , gently put in the paratha, add oil ,turn on both sides till done. Serve very hot with ketchup , pickle or curds.

Cabbage Upma

Cabbage Upma

Cabbage Upma or Upit is the simple upma blended with the green cabbage.It is tasty spicy and filling breakfast.A nice , hot breakfast for chilly winter mornings.

Ingredients:
Rava or sooji- 1cup
Water - 2 cups
Cabbage-1 cup (finely shredded)
Onion- 1big finely chopped
Green chillies-6-7
Curry leaves-few
Oil-1-2 tbsp
Mustard-1/2tsp
Jeera-1/2tsp
Channa dal-1tsp
Urad dal-1tsp
Hing- a pinch
Turmeric-a pinch
Fresh coriander-few
Lemon juice-1tbsp
Salt to taste
Freshly grated coconut-1/2 cup

Method:  Fry the rava well until slightly brown and aromatic and keep it aside.Boil water.Heat oil in a pan add musturd,jeera when they begin to splutter
add channa and urad dal fry about 2 minutes until light brown.Next add onion,cabbage ,hing
curry leaves, green chillies and fry well.Once done add fried rava ,salt and mix well next add the boiling water slowly.Stir until all the water is gone,Add the lemon juice. Close the lid and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes.Garnish with coriander leaves and coconut and serve hot.

You can also add Dhania-Jeera Powder/Kalamiri Powder for additional spicy flavor.

Carrot Akki Rotti

Carrot Akki Rotti is a colourful and tasty blend of carrots  with spices in rice flour. Akki Rotti ( Kannada) rice  flour-breakfast speciality of Karnataka.It can be made from different kinds of vegetables added to it.

Ingredients 

Rice flour          2 cups 
Onions              1 small finely chopped
Carrot                1cup  grated
Cilantro leaves   handful chopped
Coconut            little
Green chillies        7-8(as per taste)
Cumin seeds      1 tsp
Oil                     2tbsp
Salt                   to taste
Water                1 cup 
( as required)
Method
In a bowl mix rice flour with chopped and grated veggies,chilies,Cumin /jeera ,coriander leaves,coconut ,add salt.Add warm water, mix well to a soft  dough. Keep covered for 10 mins.Take 1tsp of oil, smear around a tava, take dough and spread around it.
Keep this on medium heat, cover and after minute ,add oil around sides or so it will be ready to be taken out. If you want more crispy leave it of little longer.(to make it more soft you can cover it with a plate on the tava/griddle)

To make another rotti, hold the pan upside down and run cold water all around it, pan will be cool to make another rotti by this time(be careful while running water onto hot vessel, water will start sizzling as soon as it hits the pan).Serve hot with chutney of your choice and dash of butter.

Veggie Chapati Roll

Veggie Chapati Roll or the well know frankie is simple and healthy breakfast or tiffen box recipe for kids or elders alike. 

Just adjust the spices. Add any healthy combination of vegetables and and voilà is the easy roll.
 

Ingredients

  •  1/2 cup cabbage shredded
  •  1/2 cup carrot shredded
  •  1/2 cup green peas steamed
  •  1/2 cup potatoes mashed
  •  1/2 capsicum thinly sliced
  •  1 tomato chopped
  •  1 onion chopped
  •  1-2 green chili finely chopped
  •  1/2 tsp red chilli sauce
  •  1/2 tsp green chili sauce
  •  1/2 tsp garam masala
  •  1/2 tsp dhania jeera pwd
  •  oil-2 tbsp
  •  2 tbsp oil
  •  1/2 tsp jeera
  •  1/2 tsp mustard
  •  salt for taste
  •  Cheese
  •  Tomato sauce
Method-

Make chapatis and keep it aside. Heat oil in kadai,add mustard,jeera once done add the chillies.
Add the tomatoes and let it cook. Next add all the vegetables and stir fry for 8-10 mins.
Add potatoes and mix well. Next add all the masala pwds, sauces, salt and mix it well.
Let the mix cool. Take one chapati, apply tomato sauce, next add the filling lengthwise. Add cheese on the top. Roll the chapati carefully. Fix it with a clove so the filling doesn't come out.
Reheat the chapati on medium heat till crispy. Serve hot.

    Avalakki Besibele Bhath

    Avalakki Besibele Bhath

    • Avalakki Bisibele Bhath is a favorite weekend breakfast recipe. Easy to prepare, filling and healthy to eat. A mix of poha and lentils (moong dal) with vegetables and spices makes it tasty and delicious.
    This is a traditional authentic Madhwa recipe mostly done in Karnataka.  

    • Ingredients
    • 1 cup Avalakki/Poha (thick version )
    • 1/2 cup moong dal/hesaru bele
    • 2 cups chopped vegetables(beans, carrot, peas)
    • 1 capsicum 
    • 3-4 tbsp bisi bele bath masala pwd
    • 4-5 tsp tamarind juice
    • 1-2 tsp jaggery
    • salt to taste
    •  2-3 tsp oil
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric pwd
    • Seasoning
    • 1 tsp mustard 
    • 1 tsp chana dal
    • 1 tsp urad dal
    • 1-2 red chilies
    • Few curry leaves
    • Pinch - Hing
    • 1 tsp ghee
    • 2 tsp peanut (roasted)
    • 2 tsp cashews(roasted)
    • 1 tsp Grated dry coconut (opt)

    • Method: Wash poha ,drain. Keep it aside. Meanwhile cook moongdal with turmeric and vegetables in pressure pan. Next in a pan, mix cooked moong dal, vegetables, add bhath pwd, add tamarind juice, salt and jaggery to it and mix well. Let it simmer for 5-10 mins till all the items blend well. Add soaked avalakki /poha  and mix well. 
    • Cook for 3 mins or more. Next ,heat oil in pan add all the items mentioned in the seasoning, once done add it to the avalakki.
    • Add roasted cashews and peanuts, coconut. Mix well. 
    • Add a spoon of ghee and serve Avalakki Besibele Bhath hot.

    Adai Dosa

    Adai Dosa is another healthy nutritious dosa - a very filling breakfast a good start for a busy day. It is a blend of different types of lentils and rice.


    Ingredients

    Moong dal+Tur dal+Urad dal-1/2 cup

    Rice -1 1/2 cups

    Pepper-1/2 tsp

    Jeera-1 tsp

    Coconut-optional (adds taste)

     Method- Soak rice/dals separately for 5-6 hrs. Next grind with pepper ,jeera, salt, red chillies,hing and mix well. Leave overnight. Garnish with curry leaves/coriander leaves,coconut, season with mustard seeds and onion (optional ) and then make dosa. Serve hot with butter and  chutney / chutney pudi of your choice.

    Onion Dosa

    Moong Dal Dosa

    Moong Dal Dosa is a healthy and nutritious filling breakfast..again very tasty and crispy form of  dosa.Have fun preparing.

    Moong dal Dosa,dosa,chutney

    Split Moong dal -1 cup
    Ginger - 1/4 inch

    Jeera/cumin seeds - 1 tsp
    Asafoetida/hing - a pinch
    Coriander leaves - finely chopped
    Onion -1 finely chopped (optional)

    Method

    Soak moong dal for 5-6 hours.Grind it to a smooth paste with ginger, Jeera,hing, green chillies to form a fine batter.Add salt, chopped coriander leaves.Add onions and coconut .Make dosa.Serve hot with butter and chutney of your choice.

    Khara Bhath

    Khara Bhath or Rava Masala Bhath is an extension of the basic UPMA, with a healthy and nutritious blend of vegetables and spices. A South Indian favourite.. truly filling and delicious breakfast recipe !

    KHARA BHATH
    Ingredients:
    • Upma Rava/Semolina - 1 Cup
    • Onions                      - 1/2 cup chopped
    • Tomato                     - 1/2 cup finely chopped
    • Green Peas               - 1/2 cup
    • Carrot                       - 1 chopped steamed
    • Bell Pepper               -1 chopped
    • Curry Leaves            few
    • Coriander Leaves   few
    • Green Chilies            1-2 finely chopped chilies
    • Oil                             - 2 tbsp
    • Mustard                    - 1/2 tspn
    • Chana Dal              -1/2 tsp
    • Urad Dal                -1/2 tsp
    • Hing                            pinch
    • Turmeric Powder      - 1/4 tspn
    • Salt         for taste
    • Dhania Jeera pwd    -1/4 tsp
    • Pepper Pwd            -1/4 tsp
    • Bhath Pwd              - 1 tsp
    • Ghee                           -1 tsp
    • Coconut                     -2 tsp

    Method: 

    Fry the rava until slightly brown and aromatic and keep it aside. Boil water. Steam peas till soft(add little salt) 
    Heat oil in a pan add mustard, cumin seeds when they begin to splutter add channa and urad dal fry about 2 minutes until light brown.
    Next add hing, curry leaves, green chillies, onion, tomatoes, chopped vegetables , masala pwds and stir fry well.
    Add fried rava, salt and mix well, add boiling water. 
    Stir until all the water is gone.
    Add lemon juice. 
    Reduce the flame and close the lid for 8 to 10 minutes.
    Garnish with coriander and coconut, spoon of ghee and serve Khara Bhath hot.

    Butter Dosa

    Butter Dosa

    Dosa is the most favorite South Indian Breakfast recipe which is enjoyed by all of us.There are various versions.This one is the simple version.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup urad dal
    • 2 cups rice
    • 1 /4 cup poha(avalakki)
    • 1/2 tea spn methi(fenugreek) seeds
    • Butter
    • Salt

    Method

    Soak urad dal, methi seeds and rice overnight. 

    Grind all together to a soft batter along with poha.

    Keep it aside overnight. Add salt to batter.Heat tava and spread a thin dosa. Serve with a dollop of butter and chutney of your choice or Potato Sabzi.    

    Potato Palya,Masala dosa,chutney

    Potato Onion Palya/Sabzi (Masala Dosa)



    Ingredients



    2 potatoes

    1/2 cup onion

    5-6 green chillies chopped

    1 tsp mustard
    1/2 tsp chana dal
    1/2 tsp urad dal
    Hing-pinch

    3-4 curry leaves

    A pinch turmeric

    Oil
    Salt

    Method:

    Cook the potatoes in pressure cooker, peel and mash them.
    Heat oil and add mustard seeds,chana dal,urad dal, When they start popping, add curry leaves, hing,green chillies, onion. Fry for few minutes.Add turmeric, salt and potatoes. Mix well.

    Rava Idli

    Rava Idli is healthy and tasty breakfast ,all time favorite of South Indian homes.Enjoy hot with chutney or saagu.

    Prep time: 30 mins

    Cook time: 20 mins

    Total time: 50mins

    Ingredients:
    2 cups rava (semolina) (roasted)
    1 1/2 cups yogurt (pref sour)
    2-3 tbsp grated coconut
    2 tbsp grated carrot
    1tbsp chopped, coriander
    Salt to taste

    1 tbsp. oil
    1 tsp. mustard seeds 
    1 tsp. cumin seeds
    1 tbsp. cashewnuts(roasted)
    3/4 tsp Baking soda (opt)




    Rava Idli

    Method:-

    Heat a kadai,add oil ,add mustard seeds add roasted rava,salt and mix well. 
    Allow the rava to cool.In a bowl
    Add the rava,butter milk,coconut,carrot,cashews and 
    mix well without any lumps in the batter.Cover and keep it for 1 hour.
    Apply oil onto the idli plates and pour the batter in a spoon.
    Steam it in pressure cooker for 15-20 mins on medium flame.
    Serve hot with ghee,chutney or saagu.

    Medu Vada

    Medu Vada (Uddina Vade)is another favorite South Indian breakfast but enjoyed just by all.

    Ingredients
    Medu Vada
    • 2 cups urad dal
    • 1-2 tbsp chiroti rava 
    • 1 tsp jeera
    • 1 tsp Kalamiri crushed
    • 1 onion, finely chopped (optional)
    • 1 or 2 green chili, chopped
    • Few curry leaves chopped
    • Salt
    • oil for deep frying
    • Water
    Method: Soak the urad dal overnight.Grind the dal into smooth batter with little water.Add rava,and remaining items and mix well.Heat oil in Kadai.Make the vadas and slowly slide in the oil.Fry on both sides till brown and crispy on medium heat.Drain on absorbent paper.Serve hot with chutney or sambar.

    Sabudana Roti

    Sabudana Roti/ Sabudana Rotti / Thalipeeth is yummy mix of potato, chilies with sago made into soft roti. It's spicy and tasty - a filling breakfast recipe. An easy gluten free vegan delight!  

    It's a good source of Carbohydrates!

    Sabudana Roti
    • Ingredients
    • 1 cup sago/
    •  / sabudana (tapioca pearls)
    • 1 medium potato boiled/grated
    • 1 finely chopped onion 
    • 2 tbsps rice flour (binding)
    • Roasted peanuts crushed to small pieces
    • 5-6 finely chopped Green chilies
    • 1/2 tsp Jeera/ cumin
    • few chopped Coriander leaves
    • Oil for making the roti
    • Salt to taste
    Method:
    Soak the Sabudana in enough water for about 3-4 hours.
    Once soft, drain the water.
    Add grated potatoes, chilies, coriander leaves, crushed peanuts, onions, salt, jeera, rice flour and mix well to form the dough.
    Take 1tsp of oil, smear around a tava, take dough and spread around it.
    Keep this on medium heat, cover and after minute, add oil around sides. 
    If you want more crispy leave it of little longer.(to make it more soft you can cover it with a plate on the tava /griddle).
    Serve Sabudana Roti hot with chutney, ketchup or enjoy JLT.(just like that)
