Onion Avalakki

Onion Avalakki  or Onion Masala Avalakki is spicy and tangy easy breakfast recipe. Rightly spiced with onion, makes this Poha version a must try!


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup poha ((flaked rice /avalakki)
    Onion Avalakki 

  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder 
  • 1 Onion finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp.fresh coconut
  • 2-3 tbsp. tamarind juice
  • 1-2 tsp grated jaggery
  • 2 tsp Puliyogare pwd
  • Salt for taste

 Seasoning:

  • 2-3 tbsp. oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard 
  • 1 tsp. chana dal
  • 1 tsp. urad dal
  • 2 -3 tbsp. groundnut
  • 1-2 dry red chillies
  • Hing-pinch
  • Curry leaves

Method:  Soak the poha in water for 5 minutes. Wash thoroughly and drain the water completely. Keep aside. In a  pan, add tamarind juice, jaggery, puliyogare powder, salt, turmeric and little water. Boil for 5-10 minutes.. Add poha, coconut and mix well. Remove from the heat and keep aside.
Heat oil in a pan, fry groundnuts and keep aside, next add the items under seasonings with hing and curry leaves, onions, once done add it to poha mixture and mix well. 
Enjoy Onion Avalakki hot.

Onion Sabzi / Onion Palya

Onion palya / Onion sabzi is very simple and easy to prepare. Delicious, and spicy to taste. Enjoy as side dish with chapati or rasam rice. This ಈರುಳ್ಳಿ ಪಲ್ಯ is a perfect lunch box takeaway too. It has a nice spicy taste. The sauteed onion taste is flavorful.


Lets learn how to make this flavorful Onion Sabzi Recipe.

Ingredients

  • Eerulli palya, Onion, ಈರುಳ್ಳಿ ಪಲ್ಯ
    Onion Sabzi / Onion Palya 
    Tomatoes  1 chopped
  • Onion        6-7 chopped
  • Sugar     1/4 tsp (opt)
  • Bhath Pwd-2 tbsp
  • Dhania-Jeera Pwd-1 tsp
  • Salt-for taste



Seasoning

  • Oil                  2 tbsp
  • Green Chillies  1-2 chopped
  • Mustard                1/4  tsp 
  • Jeera        1/4 tsp
  • Channa Dal   1tsp
  • Urad dal  1tsp
  • Curry leaves   few
  • Hing-pinch
  • Turmeric-pinch


Method : Onion Palya Recipe

In a kadai, heat oil, prepare the seasoning ,add mustard, hing, jeera, once they splutter add chana dal, urad dal, curry leaves, green chillies, saute for 1-2 mins.
Next add onion and fry really well, add tomatoes and stir till the tomatoes become soft.
Add salt, masala pwd, sugar and mix well. 
Serve  Onion Sabzi / Onion Palya  hot with chapatis.

Onion Masala Bhath

Onion Masala Bhath or Rice is an easy one pot meal -healthy and comforting ! Perfect lunch box recipe. 


 
  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 onions chopped 
  • 1/2 tsp. mustard
  • 1/2 tsp.chana dal
  • 1/2 tsp. urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp peanuts (opt)
  • Hing-Pinch
  • Curry leaves-few
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp. tamarind paste
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp. Bhath Powder
  • grated coconut-2 tbsp


Method- Onion Masala Bhath Recipe
  • Cook rice and Spread it on a plate.
  • Heat oil fry peanuts and keep it aside, next add mustard seeds, after it splutters , add chana dal, urad dal, hing, curry leaves, turmeric and fry until golden brown.
  • Add the chopped onion and stir fry well.
  • Next add bhath powder, salt and mix well.
  • Add rice, and mix well.
  • Garnish with coconut.
  • Serve Onion Masala Bhath hot with raita or papad or enjoy just like that.

Stir fried Onion

Stir fried Onion
Stir fried Onion with besan is an easy dry sabzi for chapati or rice. Here Onion is sautéed well with roasted gram flour and spices making it tasty and delicious.

Ingredients

  • Onion-2 big finely chopped
  • Gram flour (besan) 3 Tbsp (roasted)  
  • Oil 3 Tbsp
  • Coriander powder 2 Tsp
  • Red chili powder-1-1.5 tsp
  • salt to taste

Seasoning
  • Oil 2 Tsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 Tsp
  • Cumin seeds 1 Tsp
  • Hing -Pinch
  • Urad Dal 1/2 tsp
  • Chana Dal 1/2 tsp


Method

Heat oil for in a frying pan over moderate heat. Add items mentioned in seasoning. Once done add onion and sauté for 1 - 2 min. Add roasted gram flour, oil, coriander powder, red chili pwd and salt in a bowl. Add to onion and stir-fry over low heat for 5 - 7 minutes till onions are coated well. Serve Stir Fried Onion Sabzi hot with chapati or rasam rice.

Onion Rings

Onion Rings is yummy and tasty crisps made from thinly sliced ( ring shaped) onions in seasoned lentil flour batter. Enjoy sizzling hot cripsy onion rings with tea just anytime...

   Onion Rings

Ingredients
2 onions
(peeled and thinly sliced)

For Batter
1 cup Besan (chick pea flour)
1 tsp Rice flour
½ tsp red chili pwd
1 tsp bhath pwd
1 tsp ajwain
turmeric-pinch
Salt for taste
hot oil-1/2 tsp
Chili flakes-pinch
Mixed herbs-pinch


For Frying
Oil

Method: -Take a bowl combine all the ingredients and mix well. Add little water, and make the mix. Heat 1/2 tsp oil and add it to the batter. Add the sliced onions to the batterand mix well, the flour and onions should be well coated .

In a kadai heat sufficient oil for frying. Slowly add the sliced onion flour mix in the hot oil. Fry till golden brown on both sides. Drain on absorbent paper. Serve hot crisp fried onion rings with ketchup or chutney of your choice.

Onion Chutney Ver II

Onion Chutney is spicy and makes a good combination with DOSA,IDLI OR CHAPATI.This one is the South Indian taste with ground red chillies and dry coconut.It is delicious.

Ingredients:
2-3  onions, chopped
6-7 dry red chillies 
Tamarind paste -2 tsp
Dry coconut grated-1/2 cup
Salt as per taste

Seasoning
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Chana dal-1tsp
Urad Dal-1 tsp
Curry leaves few
Menthya seeds-few
Hing-pinch
Oil-2 tsp


Method: Heat the oil,fry onions well .Keep it aside.Next fry red chillies,dry coconut .Grind these with tamarind paste into chutney with very less water Season with the items given.Serve it with hot dosa or idli.

Kande Pohe (onion avalakki)

Kande Pohe (onion avalakki) is very simple and easy to prepare. It has the nice tangy and spicy flavor , a favorite Mumbai Breakfast. Poha (oggarane avalakki ) or seasoned rice flakes are healthy and easy to digest too, just right for all ages.

Kande Pohe
Ingredients
1 cup poha (flaked rice /avalakki) 
Onion-2 finely chopped
1 tbsp. oil
1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
1/2 tsp jeera
1/2 tsp. Chana dal
1/2 tsp. Urad Dal
1/2 tbsp Peanut
5-6 green chilies, finely chopped 
Few chopped coriander leaves
Few curry leaves
Hing-pinch
Tumeric-pinch
Salt to taste
1 tbsp. grated fresh coconut (opt)
1 tsp Lemon Juice


Method
Soak the poha in water for 5 minutes. Wash thoroughly and drain the water completely. Heat oil in a pan, fry peanuts and keep it aside then add mustard seeds, after it splutters, add chana dal/urad dal ,jeera, hing, turmeric and stir fry. Add green chillies, curry leaves. Add chopped onions , fry it for a while. Add soaked avalakki, salt and mix well. Add coconut ,coriander leaves , lemon juice , mix carefully.Serve Kande Pohe hot.

Onion Rava Dosa

Onion Rava Dosa is simple and easy breakfast recipe.A favorite South Indian dosa variety.The dosa is thin and crispy and tasty too.Enjoy!


Ingredients:
Onion Rava Dosa , Semolina,rava
Rava Dosa
  • 1/2 cup Chiroti rava (fine rava)
  • 1/4 cup rice flour
  • 1/4 cup maida
  • 1-2 tsp jeera
  • salt to taste
  • Corainder leaves-few chopped
  • Green chillies-5-6 finely chopped
  • water
  • Onion-1 finely chopped
Method-In a bowl,add all the flours,salt ,add water and mix well to make the dosa batter.Next add all the other ingredients-jeera,chillies,onion,coriander leaves.Mix well.Keep it aside for 1/2 hour.Heat the tava/skillet and make the dosas ,add oil to make it crisp and golden brown.Serve hot with chutney or enjoy it JLT!

Onion Dosa

Onion Dosa or Erruli Dose is easy and tasty. One of the few varieties of dosas that can be enjoyed over the weekend with the available dosa batter. The crispy onion dosa is delicious.

  • Dosa batter 2 cup
  • Onion 1  finely chopped
  • Green chilly 3-4 finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves
  • Jeera-1tsp
  • Oil to make dosa
Method: Mix finely chopped onion,chillies ,salt, jeera, coriander leaves and keep it ready. Spread dosa batter on the tawa, add the chopped ingredients on the top. Add oil for making dosa. Slowly flip over and let it cook on the other side.
Serve hot with chutney.

Coconut chutney with onion

Coconut Onion Chutney blend of coconut with onion and spices, another version of chutney for your Dosas, Idlis or Chapati.


Ingredients :

  •                Coconut Onion Chutney

    2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 big onion
  • 4-5 red chilies
  • 1 tbsp Puttani (roasted gram)
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal 
  •  1/2 Chana dal
  •  Curry leaves
  •  Tamarind


Method

Roast red chilies and onions in a kadai.

Grind coconut, red chilies, tamarind, puttani , chopped onions and grind it again to smooth paste adding little water.
Heat oil in a kadai , add mustard,  add urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves and fry for a while.
Add to chutney. Enjoy the chutney with Dosa.

Onion Bhajia/Fritters

Onion Bhajia (Fritters) is a favorite spicy starter/snack and is just enjoyed by all of us. The humble "Kanda bhaji"  or pakoda anyway you call it, it is definitely tempting!!!!

Ingredients

  • 1  Large Onion cut finely
  • 1 tsp red chilli pwd
  • 1/2 tsp tumeric pwd
  • 1 tsp Dhania Jeera Pwd
  • 1 tsp of dry mango powder 
  • (Everest Amchur)(opt)
  • 1/4 tsp  garam masala 
  • 1/4 tsp ajwain
  • 3 tbsp gram flour (besan)
  • 2 tbsp rice flour (opt)
  • finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 3-4 green chillies finely chopped salt 
  • Oil for frying


Method- Take a bowl combine all the ingredients and mix well. Add very little water, add cut onion
and mix well, the flour and onion should blend and be well coated and be dry. Heat a little oil and add it to this batter and mix it well.

Keep it for sometime. In a kadai heat sufficient oil for frying. Slowly add the onion besan mix in batches in the hot oil. Fry till golden brown on both sides. Drain on absorbent paper. 

Serve hot crisp bhajias with ketchup or chutney of your choice.


(You can cut the onion in long strands as well)

Onion Coconut Raita

Onion coconut raita is simple and easy to prepare.Its a South Indian Raita type a combination of coconut and onion with spices.

Ingredients
Onion Coconut Raita
  • 1/2 coconut, freshly grated
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (dahi)
  • Salt to taste
  • Finely chopped onion
  • 1-3 green chilies, finely chopped
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp mustard
  • 1/2 tsp chana dal
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • oil (seasoning)
  • Hing a pinch
Method -Take a bowl, mix the coconut, yogurt, raw onion and salt.Heat oil in a small pan. Add the mustard and cumin seeds. Next add the green chillies ,chana dal,urad dal ,curry leaves and hing.Fry for some time.Pour the seasoning over the yogurt.Serve the raita with Sambar rice or pulao.
