Kohlrabi Appe / NavilKosu Paddu

NavilKosu Paddu or Appe or Paniyaram is a yummy recipe made from left over Dosa-Idli Batter using the Paddu tava. An easy and delicious, gluten-free breakfast or snack recipe.  With its crispy exterior and soft, spongy interior, this is sure to satisfy your cravings while offering a healthy, delicious option.

A perfect bite-sized burst of flavor with goodness of  kohlrabi that's both healthy and delicious. Kohlrabi is also a versatile vegetable that can be eaten raw, cooked, or added to salads, soups, and stir-fries. This is yet another version that can be tried!!

  • Ingredients
  • Dosa Batter-2.5 cup
  • Salt as per taste
  • Few Coriander leaves
  • Green chillies-2-4 chopped
  • Kohlrabi 2 grated
  • Carrot-1 grated
  • Capsicum-1 thinly chopped
  • Cumin seeds-1/2 tsp

  • Oil as required for making paddu


  • Method:  

    Add all the above ingredients in the dosa batter and mix well. 

    Next apply oil to the paddu tava and pour the batter in the holes of tava and keep it on low flame. Cover. Once done turn it over and cook the other side. 

    Serve Kohlrabi Appe / Navilkosu Paddu hot with chutney or sambar, and enjoy the wholesome goodness of this traditional South Indian treat!

    Kohlrabi Carrot Dosa

    Kohlrabi Carrot Dosa or Carrot Navil Kosu Dosa is a healthy, nutritious and filling breakfast.

    Easy to make and enjoyed hot. Navil Kosu or Naval kol is known as Kohlrabi in English.


    Ingredients


    Salt as per taste

    Oil

    1/2 cup grated Navil Kosu
    and grated carrot

    Few Coriander Leaves

    Green chillies-3-4 finely chopped

    Jeera-1 tsp
    Mustard-1/2 tsp
    Hing-pinch

    Method: 

    Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add asafoetida and curry leaves. Add grated carrot and sauté. Next add grated kohlrabi and salt. Cook until the kohlrabi is tender but not mushy. Keep it aside.

    Take the ready dosa batter,  Add the above mix. Add coriander leaves.  Mix well.
    Heat a dosa tawa (griddle) and pour a ladle of dosa batter on it. Spread the batter in a circular motion to make a thin dosa. Cook on medium heat until the dosa is crisp and golden brown on both sides.

    Serve Kohlrabi Carrot Dosa hot with butter and chutney or Chutney powder of your choice. This is yet another tasty way to incorporate kohlrabi / carrot into your diet. Adjust the spice levels according to your preference.

    Navil Kosu Ragi Rotti

    Navil Kosu Ragi Rotti (finger millet flour) ರಾಗಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ is highly nutritious breakfast for your busy day, one of the famous South Indian dishes, easy to make and is healthy and tasty too. Soft and delicious, It has to be enjoyed hot with butter and chutney. 

    Navil Kosu or Navalkol is known as Kohlrabi in English.

    Ingredients

    • Ragi Flour 1 Cup (finger millet)
      Navil Kosu Ragi Rotti

    • Finely cut onions 2 
    • Grated Navil Kosu-1 small cup 
    • Green Chillies 5-7
    • Oil 
    • Salt as per taste 
    • Coriander leaves chopped
    • Coconut-little
    • Jeera-1tsp
        
    Method   

    Mix all the above items add water and knead it well. Make a soft dough. Keep covered for 10 mins. Add little oil and knead again before making the rottis.

    Take 1tsp of oil, smear around on the tava , take the dough and spread around with your fingers. 

    Keep this on medium heat, cover and after minute or so it will be ready to be taken out.

     If you want more crispy leave it of little longer.  Once done rotti comes out easily from tava.

    Serve the Navil Kosu Ragi Rotti hot with chutney of your choice and a dollop of butter.

    Navil Kosu Dosa

    Navil Kosu Dosa is a colourful and tasty blend of Navilkosu with onions and with spices in dosa flour. Navil Kosu or Naval kol is known as Kohlrabi in English. 

    This vegetable is a rich source of Vitamin C and potassium along with providing other health benefits.

                  Navil Kosu Dosa 

    Ingredients 
    
    Dosa flour         3 cups 
    NavilKosu          1 cup grated
    Onions 1 cup thinly sliced
    Cilantro leaves   handful chopped
    Coconut            little(opt)
    Green chillies        5-6 (as per taste)
    Jeera/ Cumin seeds      1 tsp
    Oil                     2tbsp
    Salt                   to taste
    Water              ( as required)
    Method
    In a bowl mix dosa flour with chopped and grated veggies, chilies, Cumin /jeera, coriander leaves, coconut, add salt. Add warm water, mix well. 

    Make dosa. Serve Navil Kosu Dosa hot with chutney or pickle of your choice.

    Navil Kosu Carrot Akki Rotti

    Navil Kosu Carrot Akki Rotti is a colourful and tasty blend of Navilkosu and carrots  with spices in rice flour.  Navil Kosu or Naval kol is known as Kohlrabi in English. Both these vegetables are loaded with nutrients and perfect for adults and kids alike.


    Akki Rotti ( Kannada) made from rice  flour is a breakfast / lunch speciality of Karnataka.

    It can be made from different kinds of vegetables added to it and served with either chutney, kosambris or saagu or gravies. You can just enjoy it with just butter too!


    Navil Kosu Carrot Akki Rotti 
    Ingredients 
    
    Rice flour          2 cups 
    NavilKosu          1 cup grated
    Carrot                1/2 cup  grated
    Cilantro leaves   handful chopped
    Coconut            little(opt)
    Green chillies        5-6 (as per taste)
    Jeera/ Cumin seeds      1 tsp
    Oil                     2tbsp
    Salt                   to taste
    Water              ( as required)
    Method
    In a bowl mix rice flour with chopped and grated veggies, chilies, Cumin /jeera , coriander leaves, coconut ,add salt. Add warm water, mix well to a soft  dough. Keep covered for 10 mins. Take 1tsp of oil, smear around a tava, take dough and spread around it.
    Keep this on medium heat, cover and after minute, add oil around sides or so it will be ready to be taken out. If you want more crispy leave it of little longer.
    
    To make another rotti, hold the pan upside down and run cold water all around it, pan will be cool to make another rotti by this time(be careful while running water onto hot vessel, water will start sizzling as soon as it hits the pan). Serve this soft rotti hot with chutney of your choice and dash of butter.

    Navil Kosu Uppittu / Knol Kol Upma

    Navil Kosu Uppittu or Knol Kol Upma or Upit is the simple upma blended with the green Knol Kol. It is tasty spicy and filling breakfast. A nice, hot and healthy breakfast for chilly winter mornings. Navil Kosu or Naval kol is known as Kohlrabi in English.


    • Rava or sooji- 1cup
    • Water - 2 cups
    • Navil Kosu-1 cup (finely shredded)
    • Onion- 1big finely chopped
    • Green chillies-6-7
    • Curry leaves-few
    • Oil-1-2 tbsp
    • Mustard-1/2tsp
    • Jeera-1/2tsp
    • Channa dal-1tsp
    • Urad dal-1tsp
    • Hing- a pinch
    • Turmeric-a pinch
    • Fresh coriander-few
    • Lemon juice-1tbsp
    • Salt to taste
    • Freshly grated coconut-1/2 cup

    Method:  Fry the rava well until slightly brown and aromatic and keep it aside. Boil water. Heat oil in a pan add mustard,jeera when they begin to splutter , add channa and urad dal fry about 2 minutes until light brown. Next add onion, navil kosu, hing, curry leaves, green chillies and fry well. Once done add fried rava ,salt and mix well next add the boiling water slowly. Stir until all the water is gone. Add the lemon juice. Close the lid and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and coconut and serve Navil Kosu Uppittu /   Knol Kol Upma hot.

    You can also add Dhania-Jeera Powder/Kalamiri Powder for additional spicy flavor.

    Navil Kosu Kosambri /Naval kol Salad

    Navil Kosu Kosambri (Naval kol Saladis simple and easy to prepare.A nice blend of raw Naval Kol with spices, coconut and seasonings. Salad is known as Kosambri in Kannada. Navil Kosu / Knol Knol or Naval kol is known as Kohlrabi in English.

    Ingredients

    • Navil Kosu 1 cup (De skinned & shredded)
    • Coconut 3-4 tbsp
    • oil 1 tsp
    • Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
    • Jeera 1/2tsp
    • Hing pinch
    • Chana dal-1/2 tsp
    • Urad dal-1/2 tsp
    • Curry leaves a few
    • Green chillies 3-4 finely chopped
    • Fresh coriander chopped
    • Salt to taste


    Method: 

    In a bowl add the shredded Navil Kosu, add coconut and mix.
    Meanwhile prepare the seasoning.
    Heat oil in kadai ,add mustard, jeera,chana dal, urad dal,chillies, hing ,curry leaves.
    Once done add to the kosambri mix.
    Add salt and coriander leaves and mix.
    Enjoy this healthy salad with chapati or Rasam rice.
