Chawli Chitranna

Chawli Chitranna or Alasande Kaalu Chitranna is a flavorful South Indian dish made with Chawli (black-eyed peas) and rice, blended with spices. Easy one pot meal, convenient and made with minimal efforts.

Chawli /Cowpeas or Black Eyed Peas is a nutritious and healthy legume variety. Adding this legume in your diet can contribute to overall health as it provides fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It's versatile and can be incorporated into various dishes such as salads, fritters or curries.


Ingredients
    Chawli Chitranna
  • 1 cup Chawli /Alasande Kaalu
  • (boiled)
  • 2-3 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 Amla shredded
  • Salt -as per taste
  • Few coriander leaves
  • 1.5 cup rice 

Seasoning/tadka

  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • few Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • 1/2 tsp chana dal
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • Hing-pinch
  • Turmeric-pinch
  • 3-5 finely chopped  green chilies
  • few peanuts

Method- 
Cook Rice. Allow the rice to cool, spread it on a plate. 
Next heat oil in kadai,  peanuts and keep it aside, next add the other items in seasoning, roast well, add onion and fry, add the boiled Chawli, next add the rice to this seasoning. Add salt, grated coconut, and peanuts and mix well. Sauté for 1-2 min. Garnish the rice with coriander leaves. Serve this Chawli Chitranna hot with raita or chutney or enjoy just like that.

Alasande Kaalu Vada / Chawli Fritters

Alasande Kaalu Vada / ಅಲಸಂದೆಕಾಳು ವಡೆ  is made from black eyed peas or Chawli with spices and is a delicious, healthy and nutritious evening snack recipe. Kids will love it too. Black eyed peas are rich in fiber and protein.

Cook time: 15 mins

Total time: 30 mins

Alasande Kaalu Vada















Ingredients:
  • 1 cup alasande kaalu/black eyed peas 
  • (soaked in water)
  • Green chilies- 4-5 finely chopped
  • Carom seeds/ Ajwain-1/2 tsp 
  • Ginger paste-1/2 tsp
  • Pepper powder-1 tsp
  • Curry leaves- few
  • Coriander leaves-few
  • Salt -for taste
  • grated Coconut-1/4 cup
  • Oil-for frying
  • Rice flour-1 tbsp


Method:

Soak the alasande kaalu well overnight. Once soft, grind without much water. In a bowl, add  the remaining items mentioned under ingredients except oil, add the ground paste and  mix well. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them as patties.  Heat oil in a pan and fry till until it turns brown and crisp. Serve Chawli Fritters hot with chutney or sauce/ketchup.

Alasande Kalu Soppu Huli

Alasande Kalu Soppu Huli is a healthy nutritious accompaniment for rice.You can enjoy with chapati too. A coconut spice blend with healthy greens and Black Eyed pea a must- try in your kitchen.

Alasande kalu / Chawli is a combined with Amaranth leaves is nutritious gravy blended with vitamins and proteins.Simple yet tasty-southern delight.

Ingredients
Alasande Kalu Soppu Huli   
  • Amaranth leaves / Dantina soppu– 1 cup
  • ( cleaned and chopped)
  • Chawli/Alasande Kalu-1/2 cup (cooked)
  • Toor dal-1/4 cup (cooked)
  • Sambar Pwd-2 tbsp 
  • Coconut-1/2 cup
  • Tamarind paste-1 tsp
  • Salt-for taste
  • Seasonings
  • Oil-1-2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
  • Hing-pinch
  • Cury leaves-few
  • Turmeric pwd-pinch
  • Red chillies-1-2 (opt)

Method-  Pressure cook Toor dal and Alasande kalu well.Cook greens in water for 10-15 mins.

Grind coconut and sambar powder and keep it aside.
Next in a vessel,mix the dal,kalu and soppu ,add tamarind paste, salt and the ground paste ,and mix well.
Let it boil well for 10 mins,simmer , prepare the seasoning. Add it to the sambar, mix.
Serve Alasande Kalu Soppu Huli hot with rice or chapati with spoon of ghee.

Chawli Usli / Black Eyed Pea Salad

Chawli Usli / Black Eyed Pea Salad is a nutritious , quick snack and healthy too. Try it out. It is simple and easy to prepare. You can enjoy with rasam rice or chapati. Non Onion recipe you can make it during festivals.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Chawli /Alasande Kaalu
  • (boiled)
  • Lemon juice-1tsp

Seasoning/tadka

  • Oil
  • few Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • 1/2 tsp chana dal
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • Hing-pinch
  • Turmeric-pinch
To Grind

  • 3-5 finely chopped  green chilies
  • 2-3 tbsp grated coconut
  • Few coriander leaves
  • Salt -as per taste

Method- Mix the cooked chawli with salt .Season with mustard seeds, jeera, chana dal, urad dal, curry leaves, turmeric and hing. Add lemon juice ,add the ground paste and mix well. Serve Chawli Usal or Usli as snack with curds or enjoy as side dish for chapati or rasam rice.

Chavli Curry

Chavli Curry (Chavli-Black eyed Peas, Alasande Kaalu -Kannada)  is a healthy nutritious side dish for chapati or rice. 

Black eyed peas  is a legume variety used in Indian Homes. This curry is tomato onion based.

Chawli Curry
Ingredients

  • Chawli/Black eyed peas – 1 cup
  • (cooked )
  • Tomatoes-1 cup (chopped)
  • Onion-1 cup (chopped)
  • Ginger garlic paste-1/2 tsp
  • Dhania Jeera pwd-1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala-1 tsp
  • Red chili Pwd-1 tsp
  • Green chilies-1-2
  • Oil-1-2 tsp
  • Salt-for taste
  • Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves-few



Method-

In a pan, heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds add onions and sauté well.
Next add ginger garlic paste, chillies and fry for 1-2 mins.
Next add chopped tomatoes, and fry till mushy.
Next add the masala pwds and fry. 
Add the cooked chawli and mix.
Add  about 1/2 cup water and stir well.
'Simmer on low heat for 10-15 mins till the gravy blends well.
Serve hot with rice or chapati.
