Rajma on Toast

Rajma on Toast (Rajma aka red kidney beans ) is easy and healthy recipe for your kids. Nutritious Rajma on buttered toast is very tasty and delicious. Worth a try ! Rajma is a good source of folate, dietary fiber and carbs.

  Rajma on Toast


1 cup Rajma (kidney beans)
(soaked and boiled)
1 cup chopped tomato
2-3 tsp oil
1/2 cup grated onions
Cumin /Jeera  - 1 tsp
1-2 green chillies
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1 tsp Garam Masala
1/2 tsp Dhania Jeera Pwd
1/2 tsp red chili pwd
Kasuri Methi-1tsp
salt to taste

Method- Heat the oil in a kadai, add the onions and sauté for 2 to 3 mins.Next add ginger garlic paste, chilies and fry well. Add the chopped tomatoes,cook till it becomes soft. Add the masala pwds and mix. Next add the cooked rajma.Add salt,cook on low heat and the mix thickens. Keep stirring,cook on simmer for 5-10 min. Toast the bread on toaster. Apply butter,
place this mix on the bread slice, add onions and ketchup. Serve immediately.

Sabsige Sappu Ambode / Dill Leaves Fritters

Sabsige Sappu Ambode / Dill Leaves Fritters  ( ಸಬ್ಬಸಿಗೆ ಅಮ್ಬೋದೆ is yet another fritter variety made from Dill leaves in South India. Easy to prepare.  A lentil base with few greens making it healthy and tasty. Dill leaves, low in calories, has  anti-oxidant, disease preventing, and health promoting properties.

  • 1 cup Channa Dal
  • Hing-pinch
  • 9-10 Green Chillies 
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup coconut
  • Coriander leaves
  • Onions(Optional)
  • few Dil leaves(sabsige soppu) finely chopped
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Jeera-1tsp

Method:Soak Channa Dal for half an hour. Next grind soaked channa dal with jeera,salt,green chillies,hing very coarsely with very little water. Next add grated coconut ,chopped coriander leaves,chopped dil leaves , onions  and salt to the mixture and mix well. Make small balls and flatten it. Set it on a plate.In a kadai,heat  oil , slowly slide in the ambodes , deep fry till golden brown on both sides. Drain on absorbent paper. Serve hot with chutney or sauce or enjoy just like that with hot cup of tea or coffee.

Karibevu Chitranna / Curry Leaves Rice Ver 2

  1. Karibevu Chitranna or Curry Leaves Rice is a healthy and flavorful one pot meal made with Curry leaves blended with spices. Curry leaves is abundant with iron,carbohydrates,energy and vitamins Nutritious, healthy and delicious, you must try this rice !!

    Cooked rice: 1 cup

    Jeera: 1-2 tsp
    Pepper:1/2 tsp
    Urad Dal-1 tsp
    Curry leaves-handful
    peanuts: few
    oil for frying 3-4 tsp
    Mustard -1/2 tsp
    Urad dal-1/2 tsp
    Chana dal-1/2 tsp
    Grated coconut: 2-3 tbsp 
    Salt:for taste

    Method-  Pressure cook rice and spread it on plate to cool. In a kadai,roast curry leaves,jeera,fry urad dhal, black pepper,  in little oil. Next grind curry leaves, jeera,pepper into a powder. Take a kadai, heat oil and add peanuts /cashews and fry well. Keep it aside .Add mustard,chana dal urad dal,hing,and sauté. Add the curry leaves mixture and fry for1-2 mins. Next add the rice, salt ,fried peanuts coconut and mix well and serve hot.

    (you can add 1-2 green chilies while grinding )

White Pumpkin Raita / Ash Gourd Raita 
White Pumpkin Raita / Ash Gourd Raita  is made from yogurt/curds or dahi. It is normally served as dip/side dish. It provides cooling effect and has a nice taste. This raita is with a touch of ground mix of raw mustard (hasi sasive ) coconut and chilies. (Kannada name: ಬೂದಿ ಕುಂಬಳಕಾಯಿ)


  • Grated white pumpkin - 1 cup
  • Thick curd - 1 cup
  • Green chilli - 2-3
  • Grated coconut - 1/3 cup
  • Fresh coriander leaves - handful
  • Mustard-1/2 tsp

  • Mustard - 3/4 tsp
  • Hing/asafoetida - pinch
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Oil

Deseed and peel the skin of pumpkin.Grate and keep it aside. Add salt and mix for leave for 10 mins .Meanwhile grind chilli, mustard,coconut and coriander leaves to a fine paste. Prepare seasoning adding the items mentioned above. Remove the excess water from pumpkin. Add the curds, add ground paste and mix. Add the seasoning and stir well. Serve with parathas or rice.

Cucumber Dosa

Cucumber Dosa is an easy, quick dosa variety.  Simple variant from the simple cucumber , thin and crispy and yummy !

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Poha/avalakki - handful
  • Grated Cucumber-1 cup
  • Coriander leaves-few
  • Green chillies, finely chopped - 5-6
  • coconut, grated - 2 table spoon
  • jeera - 1 tsp
  • salt - as per taste
  • Water 

Method:  Soak rice, poha and methi seeds for few hours. Next grind them in a mixer. Once done , add cucumber ,chilies, jeera, coriander leaves, coconut and grind again so the batter blends well. Keep it for some time. Make dosas. Serve hot with chutney or pickle of your choice.

Dal Chapati

Dal Chapati , yes it is an interesting and  wholesome recipe. Made from cooked dal mixed with wheat flour and bingo you have a mildly spiced chapati loaded with nutrients of legumes.

A perfect food for you and your little ones.Enjoy !

Ingredients :

  • 2 cups  wheat atta 
  • 2 cups  toor dal (cooked and mashed well)
  • 1/4 tsp  turmeric powder 
  • 1/2 tsp Dhania Jeera powder 
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder 
  • Ghee or oil

Method- Pressure cook the dal with turmeric .Once cool , mash it well.In a bowl , add the flour,masala pwd,salt and mix it .Next add the cooked and mashed dal into this flour and knead it well to make a soft dough. Add little oil and knead it well.Keep it aside for 30 mins.Make chapatis.Heat a skillet (tava) , gently put in the chapati add oil ,turn on both sides till done.
Serve hot with any sabzi or gravy.

Bittergourd fritters

Bittergourd fritters is an interesting recipe, perfect for rainy season. Slightly bitter and spiced,blended in Gram flour , it has a unique taste. Try it out. Bittergourd is known as Hagalkaayi in Kannada or Karela in Hindi.

  • Bittergourd / Hagalkaayi / Karela               - 3 nos
  • (washed and cut into thin round rings)
  • Besan/Gram flour                                      - ½ cup
  • Rice flour                                              - 3 tsp
  • Red chilly pwd                                      - 1 tsp
  • Chat masala pwd                                   - ¼ tsp
  • Oil to deep fry
  • Salt to taste  

Method- In a bowl , add the sliced Bittergourd rings and sprinkle salt on them. Leave it for some time. This will release water and bitterness.Meanwhile in a bowl, take gram flour, rice flour, red chilly pwd, chat masala, salt and mix. Slowly add water and mix.Heat little oil and add this to the besan mix.Add the  bitter gourd rings to the flour mix.In a deep pan, heat oil for frying. Carefully drop the coated rings in the oil. Fry these well on both sides.

Once done,drain the oil and place it on paper napkin.

Capsicum Onion Cheese sandwich

Capsicum Onion Cheese sandwich is a perfect recipe that can be enjoyed as snack or lunch.A right mix of vegetables,with cheese and seasoning.Try it hot on a nice rainy day or over a relaxing weekend,you will definately enjoy it!

Capsicum(finely chopped) - 1/2 cup
 Tomatoes(finely chopped) - 1/2 cup
 Onions(finely chopped) - 1/2 cup
Pepper pwd-1/2 tsp
 Green chillies(finely chopped) - 2 
 Salt - to taste.
Italian seasoning-to taste
Chaat masala-to taste
Mozarella Cheese
Green chutney

In a bowl, add chopped capsicum, tomatoes, onions, green chillies, salt, pepper powder,seasoning in a bowl and mix it well. Next add Mozzarella cheese and mix it again. Take bread slice and apply green chutney and butter. Place this mix on the bread slice, cover this with one more bread slice. Toast it in the toaster. Serve hot with tomato ketchup.

Karela Masala

Karela Masala  is an interesting and healthy gravy that you can enjoy with  Indian breads or rice. It is  delicious and simple to cook. Karela is known as Bitter Gourd or Hagalkaayi in kannada. It is very nutritious and tasty. Try it out.

  • 1 cup karela (finely chopped)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato finely chopped
  • 1/2  green chilly chopped
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • 1/2 tsp mustard
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli pwd
  • Turmeric pwd-pinch
  • 1/2 tsp dhania jeera pwd
  • 1 tsp Bhath pwd 
  • 1-2 tsp tamarind paste
  • 2 tsp jaggery pwd
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Curry leaves-few
  • Coriander leaves-few

Method-In a kadai,add little oil ,fry karela well and keep it aside. Next in a pan,heat oil ,add jeera,mustard, chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves and saute for 2-3 mins.Add the chopped tomatoes and masala pwds and fry well.Add little water and cook for 1-2 mins.Next add the fried karela and mix. Simmer for 2-3 mins till the gravy blends well stirring occasionally.Garnish with coriander leaves .Serve hot with rice or rotis.

Tomato Chutney Ver III

  • Tomato chutney is tangy and spicy. Easy to prepare. Taste yummy with bread or dosa alike. Tomatoes are low in calories and rich in vitamins. Tomato is an important source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, folate, and potassium for body. Do include in your diet.
    Tomato Chutney


    • 5-6 – Tomatoes (chopped)
    • 1/2 tsp -Ginger paste
    • 1-2 – Green Chillies
    • 1-2 tsp Sarin Pudi
    • Pinch of Asafoetida
    • 1/2 tsp pepper pwd
    • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
    • 1/2 tsp – Mustard Seeds
    • Few-Curry Leaves
    • 1/2 tsp- Turmeric
    • Salt As Required
    • 1 tsp – Sugar
    • few- Coriander Leaves(finely chopped)
    • 1-2 tbsp Oil

  • Method- In a pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, ginger paste, asafoetida,curry leaves,turmeric. Once done add tomatoes and green chillies and stir well for 10 mins. Add water. Next add the masala pwd, sugar, salt and mix well. Add coriander leaves. Let till boil, slowly the mix will thicken. Enjoy with chapati or bread or dosa.

    Padavalakayi Bajji/ Snake Gourd Fritters

    Padavalakayi Bajji (-parval/snakegourd/ ಪಡವಲಕಾಯಿ ) is an interesting deep fried fritters. Simple and easy to prepare, the snake gourd pieces are thinly sliced dipped in a besan batter fried till golden brown. 

    • Snake Gourd – 1 cup (thinly sliced
    • deseeded)
    • Besan Flour – 1 cup
    • Rice Flour – 1/4 cup
    • Red Chilli Powder – 3 tsp 
    • Dhania-Jeera Pwd-1 tsp
    • Salt – to taste
    • Ajwain/Carrom Seeds -2 tsp
    • Oil – for frying

    MethodCut the snake gourd to thin round slices,remove the seeds and keep it aside in water. Next in a bowl , add the flours, spices,salt and ajwain and mix. Add water to make a smooth paste. Meanwhile keep oil for frying. Take 1tsp hot oil and add to the besan mix. Next dip the sliced snake gourd pieces in the batter till it is coated well and carefully slide in the oil. Deep fry till they become golden brown on both sides.
    Enjoy delicious snake gourd fritters with chutney or sauce.

    Pista Sheera

    Pista Sheera is yummy flavored sweet that can be made in very less time Semolina blended with powdered Pistachio and other flavors make it very delicious. Enjoy this healthy dessert .

    cup Chiroti rava (semolina or sooji)
     cup Milk
    cup Ghee
    Few Raisins
    cup  Sugar 
    Few Cashew nuts/Badam 
    2-3 tbsp  Pista Pwd (homemade
    sliced Pista pieces

    Method -

    Roast rava in the ghee till aromatic.

    Add sugar and warm  milk and lower the flame. .Simmer and cover with lid till it blends in. Add raisins and cardamom powder ,pista powder mix well.Add fried cashew nut and  kesar .Enjoy with little ghee on the top.

    Malabar Paratha

    Malabar Paratha aka Kerala Parotta is an interesting South Indian layered  flatbread type. Made from all purpose flour it is tasty, worth a try for weekends.Enjoy it buttered and hot. A definate hit with the kids.

    Malabar Paratha 
    • 3 cups Flour (maida)
    • 1 cup Water
    • 2 tbsp Oil
    • 1 tsp Salt
    • 1 tsp Sugar
    • 1 tsp Baking powder
    • Oil 
    • Butter

    Method-In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt .Add oil and blend well .Next add water  knead well for 5-10 mins to make a soft dough. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 mins.Again knead for 5 more mins. Next make small balls .Take one ball and roll it very thin chapati .Now make pleats from top to bottom.Roll the pleats to form a small spiral . Next make paratha  out of this spiral.Repeat for the other balls.Heat  tawa ,place this rolled out paratha and let it cook well on both sides,add butter or oil.Serve hot with any interesting gravy.

    Corn Chitranna

    Sweet Corn Chitranna is a easy seasoned rice variety with yummy corn added to it . Kids will definitely love it.Chitranna is a favorite South Indian Rice variety, you can make variety of chitranna aka one pot meal.This is a very simple one.

    Corn Chitranna 
    • 1 cup rice (cooked)
    • 1/4 cup fresh coconut(grated)
    • salt to taste
    • Sweet corn boiled 1 cup
    • 1/2 cup onion finely chopped

    • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    • 1/2  tsp cumin seeds
    • 1 tsp channa dal
    • 1 tsp urad dal
    • few cashew nuts
    • 1 tbsp peanuts
    • Hing pinch
    • Green chilies-2-3
    • few Curry leaves
    • Few coriander leaves
    • Oil-2 tbsp

    Method:  Allow the rice to cool ,spread it on a plate.Next heat oil in kadai,roast cashews and peanuts and keep it aside ,next add the other items in seasoning ,roast well ,add onion and fry ,  add the rice to this seasoning.Add the sweet corn , grated coconut,cashews and peanuts and mix well.Saute for 1-2 min.Garnish the rice with coriander leaves.Serve hot .

    Thokku Dosa

    Thokku Dosa is an interesting dosa recipe.Just add ready made or home made mango thokku and you have a tangy spicy dosa ready in no time ! Try it out .

    • Dosa Flour 2 cups
    • Salt as per taste
    • Oil
    • Jeera-1 tsp
    • Onion-1  finely chopped
    • Mango thokku-3-4 tbsp


    In a bowl , take the dosa flour ,add the above items and mix really well.
    Make dosas. Serve hot with butter and chutney of your choice.
